In that situation, it would probably be very useful to have some way of verifying that the license key you are getting with the PC has not already been used someplace else. Same would apply to people buying keys on eBay, but then I guess the question is - why would anyone do that? Afterwards you can do a clean install, skipping the product key when prompted. Shortly after install Windows will become activated with a generic key after contacting the activation servers and verifying the hash matches a recorded upgrade. To check Windows 10 activation status, do the following. Open Start > Settings app > Update and Security. Select Activation, in the left panel. Here you will see the activation status.
You should just be able to reinstall the same edition of Windows the PC came with and it should just work without even asking you for a key. You don’t have to do anything special if you have this. 
Instead, the key is stored in the computer’s UEFI firmware or BIOS by the manufacturer.

Feb 26, 2016 I purchased a privated Win 7 Ultimate key, which I used MGADiag to verify as soon as I installed it and then again after I activated it. A setting that will block windows update from invalidating windows based on the product key if it has been more than 90 days since activation. Will not ever be considered legitimate. For instance, if you purchased one copy of Windows and installed in on more than one PC, online validation might fail because the product key has already been used on another PC. Normally, the rule to follow for most copies of Windows is that only one copy of Windows can be installed on one PC.
